Do you fall asleep while driving?

Soon you won’t be able too! Tiredness at the wheel is a major safety problem, not only for the person who fell asleep, but for their passengers, and others on or near roads. It’s recommended that you take regular breaks while driving and if you feel sleepy to pull over and rest, but accidents still occur due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel.

Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Germany are in the process of perfecting their new device called the Eyetracker. This device, as the name implies, tracks your eyes and can emit an alarm when it detects that your eyes are closed for a certain period of time, hopefully waking you up and preventing a crash!

Using multiple cameras it tracks your pupils and line of vision. Several other systems have tried this but have failed due to the complications that arise from multiple faces types, positioning of features and head movement. Eyetracker seems to have cracked this issue and are claiming that it works with any car and any person. The device itself does not rely on extra computers or cluncky hardware as it’s completely self-sufficient and compact, able to be placed behind the rear-view mirror or sun visor to not intrude on the driver’s handling of the car.

In addition to driving, there are other fields that Eyetracker could be useful in, especially in Gaming as was discussed earlier on TechOcular and the field of medicine.
